On July 1, 1954, J.C. and Ola Davis opened the Food Center in Conway, North Carolina, bringing the first self-service grocery store to the area. They did all that they could to bring this much-needed business to life for the community - even stacking the first inventory delivery in their living room until the store was completed.
When Ola passed away just a few years later, J.C. was left to run the business while raising three children on his own. Johnny, his youngest son, worked closely with his father from the age of 10, learning the value of excellent customer service and quality products from the man who knew it best.
The Davis family served their community for more than 50 years before Johnny and his wife, Michelle, sold the Food Center and moved their family to the Outer Banks. Conway's first grocery store still flourishes today, and J.C.'s son and business partner is still following in his footsteps.
It was Johnny's dream to bring the top-notch products and outstanding customer service that he and his father had practiced throughout the years to the beach. After living in the area for nearly three years, he and Michelle have made that dream a reality. Months of preparation, extensive remodeling, and taste testing led to the opening of Butcher Block on March 1, 2007. Butcher Block is located at milepost 11.5 in Nags Head in Pirate's Quay Shoppes, right by the big propeller.
Butcher Block offers competitively priced meats, including high quality choice Angus beef, pork, and poultry, all cut-to-order to the customer's specifications. The shop features a full line of exquisite deli sandwiches, created carefully by the butcher's wife herself. Daily lunch specials, boxed lunches, soups, salads, and desserts are also available.
Johnny, Michelle, and their family would like to thank the local community and visitors for their patronage and invite you to stop on in for a memorable meat-buying experience.
